Tungnath Temple
About
Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world, standing at about 3,680 m in the Garhwal Himalaya. It is the third of the five Panch Kedar shrines, where the arms (bahu) of Lord Shiva are worshipped. Local tradition links the stone temple with the Pandavas, and it has been a pilgrimage for centuries.
How to reach
The trek starts at the road-head trailhead and is roughly 3.5 km one way on a well-laid stone path with a steady climb, usually 2 to 3 hours up. The trailhead is reached by road from Rishikesh or Haridwar via Rudraprayag and Ukhimath.
Best time
Late spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) give the clearest views. In winter the temple is closed, the deity is worshipped at Mukunath (Mukkumath) village, and the trail is under snow.
Tips
- Start early, as mountain weather changes fast.
- Carry warm layers, a rain cover, water and snacks.
- Wear sturdy shoes and use a walking stick.
- Ponies are usually available at the base. Confirm locally.
- Respect temple rules and keep the trail clean.
