Rudranath Temple
About
Rudranath is one of the Panch Kedar temples, where the face of Lord Shiva is worshipped in a natural rock shrine. The temple is reached only on foot, through forest, rhododendron slopes and high meadows. In winter the deity is moved to Gopeshwar.
How to reach
The trek starts from a road head in the Gopeshwar and Mandal area and is a demanding climb of around 20 km or more each way, usually done over two to three days. Fitness and acclimatisation matter. Hire a local guide.
Best time
May to October. The temple is closed in winter.
Tips
- Carry warm and rain gear and enough water, and start early each day.
- Check weather and trail conditions with locals before setting out.
- Book stays in advance, as high-altitude options are very limited.
