Kartik Swami Temple

About

Kartik Swami is a temple of Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva, on a ridge above Kanakchauri village. Hundreds of bells hang around the shrine. On clear days it offers a sweeping panorama of Trishul, Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba and other peaks.

How to reach

Drive to Kanakchauri on the Rudraprayag to Pokhri road, then walk about 3 km uphill. The climb is moderate and suits most travellers.

Best time

The weeks after the monsoon and the cool season give the clearest skies. Early morning offers the best light.

Tips

• Carry water and a light jacket.
• Pair it with a visit to Ukhimath or Deoria Tal.
