Kalimath Temple

About

Kalimath is a village in the Mandakini valley of Rudraprayag district, near Guptkashi, and is known for its temple of Goddess Kali, counted among the revered Shakti Peeths. The sanctum is unusual: instead of an idol, a sacred kund covered by a yantra is worshipped. Local tradition says the kund is uncovered only on one night during Navratri.

The nearby village of Kaviltha is associated by local belief with the poet Kalidasa, and a memorial hall dedicated to him stands there.

How to reach

Kalimath lies in the Mandakini valley close to Guptkashi, away from the main Kedarnath road. Hire a local taxi from Guptkashi or Ukhimath and ask your driver or host about the current road conditions.

Best time

The temple can be visited year round. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant, and the Navratri festivals in March-April and September-October are lively but crowded.
