Chandrashila Peak
About
Chandrashila, meaning "moon rock", is a summit at about 4,000 m. A small temple stands at the top. Tradition says Lord Rama meditated here after the defeat of Ravana. On clear days the view takes in Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba and Bandarpunch.
How to reach
Walk to Tungnath first, then continue about 1.5 km on a steeper path. The whole trek from the trailhead is about 5 km one way and takes most people 4 to 5 hours up.
Best time
Sunrise is the favourite time. March to June and September to November are best. Winter brings snow and a harder, colder trek, so go only with a local guide and proper gear.
Tips
- Start before dawn for sunrise, with a torch.
- It is very cold and windy at the top, so carry a windproof jacket, cap and gloves.
- Turn back if clouds close in or weather worsens.
- Carry your waste back down.
